December 2, 2013, is a date that forever changed my life. Eleven years ago, on this very day, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s a day etched into my memory—not just for the fear and uncertainty it brought, but for the way it marked a turning point in how I live, love, and listen to myself.
This year, as I reflect on my “Cancerversary,” I want to share my story. It’s about more than a diagnosis. It’s about learning to trust my intuition, following the breadcrumbs life places before us, and discovering the strength that comes from deep within.
It Started with a Pimple
Back in 2013, I noticed a stubborn pimple on my left breast that wouldn’t go away. It wasn’t painful or alarming, but something about it nagged at me. At lunch one day, I mentioned it to my mom, who reassured me it was probably nothing. Still, that inner voice persisted.
One ordinary day, during my lunch break, I turned on the TV—a rare occurrence for me—and caught a segment about breast cancer. As I glanced at that persistent pimple, my intuition whispered, “Call the doctor.” That calm, certain voice led me to schedule an appointment, even when I wasn’t overly concerned.
At the doctor’s office, the pimple turned out to be nothing. But during a routine exam, my doctor discovered a lump. What followed was a whirlwind of tests, imaging, and biopsies—all squeezed into the day before Thanksgiving. I’ll never forget the radiologist’s words: “I will be very surprised if this isn’t cancer.”
Facing the Diagnosis
On December 2, I received the call. It was breast cancer. The weight of those words felt crushing; like the walls were closing in around me. But even amid the fear and chaos, that same inner voice quietly reassured me: This will change your life.
I didn’t know how or why at the time, but I trusted that intuition.
Stress Eating and the Birth of Fat2Fierce®
That December was one of the most challenging months of my life. Between scans, appointments, and facing an uncertain future, I turned to food for comfort. Having recently celebrated a 100-pound weight loss, I was devastated to see myself gain 30 pounds in a single month.
Yet, in the midst of it all, that same intuitive voice spoke again. It didn’t criticize or panic. It calmly said, “You need to figure out how to stop stress eating.”
That moment was the seed of what would eventually become Fat2Fierce®. I realized I didn’t need another diet, another plan, or another quick fix. What I needed was to heal my relationship with food and understand why I turned to it during life’s curveballs.
Following the Breadcrumbs
As I moved through treatment and recovery, I started exploring alternative healing modalities like meditation, Reiki, and energy work. These practices opened my mind to new ways of thinking and being.
Then, one fateful day, I spotted a sign for a life coach at my dentist’s office. I didn’t even know what a life coach was, but something nudged me to take down the number. That decision led me to enroll in a life coaching program, where I finally found my calling.
Leaving my corporate job to become a life coach wasn’t just a career change—it was the fulfillment of that intuitive promise that breast cancer would change my life.
The Power of Intuition
Looking back, I’m profoundly grateful for the lessons that cancer taught me. It showed me the power of intuition—the quiet, steady voice that guides us when we’re willing to listen. It’s a voice distinct from the critic or the panicked chatter of fear. It’s calm, clear, and unwavering.
Learning to trust that voice didn’t just save my life; it gave me a purpose. Today, through Fat2Fierce®, I help women rebuild their relationships with food and their bodies. I empower them to trust themselves, reclaim their power, and write a new story—just as I did.
Your Intuition Is Your Superpower
As you read this, I encourage you to pause and ask yourself: Am I listening to my intuition? That deep inner wisdom can guide you through even the darkest times.
Sometimes it comes as a whisper, sometimes as a gentle nudge. But when you learn to trust it and follow the breadcrumbs, it can lead you to places you never imagined.
Today, on this Cancerversary, I’m reminded of how much has changed in 11 years. And while I wouldn’t wish the journey of breast cancer on anyone, I am grateful for the lessons, the growth, and the mission it inspired.
